Maine Tourny Series?

Post by acegoodrich on Mon Apr 11, 2011 3:14 pm

Paintball's popularity has fallen drastically in Maine since the MRPL(Maine recreational paintball league for those of you who dont know) went down all those years ago. For those who dont remember, the MRPL was more than just a league, it was a community of players, they had an online forum much like our MainePB site here and players from all over the state talked to and knew eachother. When that community died, so did the paintball in the state; there was no way to keep in touch, or advertise events. With this site were all getting close like we were back in the day... I think that a MainePB tournament series could happen. But it needs to be done right. One "open" division and one restricted division like the old MAC and MiniMAC events of years' past maybe. We could have a 5 and 3 man division, or just 5 man. very low entrance and paint cost, cash prizes dependent on the number of teams entered, all the profit brought in would go back to the players. Another thing that needs to happen with it is to have it encompass several fields like all the old series used to, unlike NEPL now, which only plays at Maynard.

I think its a great way to build that sense of community again. any other thoughts?

We should grab a rack of beers and have a meeting about this.

Alex are you talking about possibly running another Super Summer Series?

They only issue w/ the Multi field thing is that the MRPL was a coalition of the Maine Field Owners. We only really have REF from Field51.

Getting the Field owners to agree it it would be the 1st step in doing this.

The first step would be getting a proposal together. We need something to bring to the feild owners in order for them to have something to agree to. Who's buying the paint? Who's providing the refs? WHo's providing the air? Who gets what percentage of the entrance? What are the expectations of the feild? What are the responsiblities of the league? As soon as you approach BAP, Feild51, Birch Hill, etc. they are going to ask these things. If you have a business plan worked out it will look much better. If you provide a outline that benifits the league as well as the field owners then they would be more likely to enter a coalition, if only for the extra revenue and exposure.

Right, this is why we should have a get together and discuss it all if you guys think itll be a worth while endeavor... I know theres a couple teams with mainePB.com stamped on their jerseys *ahem*, maybe some of them would be down to ref voluntarily, or at least for pretty cheap to help out the sport in the state. I would be down to write up some ideas if theres interest in getting together and trying to plan some events this year or next year... I dont know how many speedball fields we have now a-days in the state, so we would have to figure out how many fields we can actually use... We also need to find out if there are enough teams to make it worth it... I know there aren't a ton around here, but we have to start somewhere...

Does anyone have any ideas for a venue to meet up and talk about this? or should we just bounce ideas back and forth on here? I can also make a group on facebook that we could discuss this stuff on if I can get names of folks interested in helping to plan

I'm game for this, in every way. And I would Volunteer for Reffing or anything else. Maine Paintball was it's BEST in the days of the MRPL, and i would love to have a hand in bringing it back!

This is my reason for making this site. I heard about the MRPL and decided I'd try and bring the paintball community back together myself. This is something I really want to do, but there are a few problems. Field owner co-operation is going to be tough to get and it would be hard to find a good amount of teams to participate. If we can find a way to get past these problems I think it would be a surmountable endeavor.

the MRPL Started small, hosting a SMALL Tourny series, i think it was 3man only at 1st... and grew from there.

there are 5 active fields that i know of left in maine.

V-town, BAP, Field-51, Lost Valley and Birch Hill.

Well then that's the way I think it should start out. A lot of 3 man teams.

Sounds good, and the good thing about 3man events, is teams are easy (er) to find and put together...

If we do this the 2 brackets need to be pretty well defined.
